What Exactly is a Subluxation? (And Why Your Spine Cares)

By February 2, 2026No Comments

If you’ve ever stepped foot in a chiropractic office, you’ve likely heard the word “Subluxation.” It sounds technical, perhaps even a bit intimidating. But understanding this one word is the key to unlocking how your body functions, heals, and performs.

As we celebrate “Love Your Spine” month, let’s pull back the curtain on this chiropractic cornerstone.

The Simple Definition

In the simplest terms, a subluxation is a misalignment of one or more of the 24 vertebrae in your spinal column.

However, it’s more than just a bone being out of place. When a vertebra shifts out of its proper position, it creates “nerve interference.” Think of your nervous system as a high-speed fiber-optic cable carrying messages from your brain to every cell in your body. A subluxation is like a “kink” in that cable.

The “Three T’s”: What Causes Subluxations?

Subluxations don’t just happen from major accidents. They are usually the result of the “Three T’s”:

  1. Thoughts (Stress): Emotional stress causes muscles to tighten, pulling vertebrae out of alignment.

  2. Traumas (Physical): This includes big events like car accidents, but also “micro-traumas” like sitting at a desk for 8 hours or looking down at a smartphone.

  3. Toxins (Chemical): Poor nutrition, pollution, or dehydration can cause body inflammation that affects spinal stability.

Why You Might Not Feel It (Yet)

Here is the catch: Subluxations are often silent. Only about 10% of your nerves carry pain signals. The other 90% are busy controlling your heart rate, digestion, and immune system. You can have a subluxation for years without “back pain,” while it quietly drains your energy, disrupts your sleep, or weakens your immune response.

How We Fix It: The Adjustment

The goal of a chiropractic adjustment is to identify these subluxations and apply a precise, gentle force to return the vertebrae to their proper position. By removing the interference, we “turn the lights back on,” allowing your brain to communicate with your body at 100% capacity.

Love Your Spine This Month

This February, we are encouraging everyone to stop waiting for pain to be the signal for care. Just as you wouldn’t wait for a toothache to brush your teeth, you shouldn’t wait for a “blown out” back to check your alignment.

Is your “cable” kinked? Give your body the love it deserves. Schedule a spinal check-up this week and let’s make sure your nervous system is firing on all cylinders.
