More Than Just a Backache: How Your Thoracic Spine Controls Your Internal World

When most people think of “mid-back pain,” they think of a dull ache between the shoulder blades caused by sitting too long at a computer. But as a chiropractor, I look at the mid-back (the Thoracic Spine) and see the “Control Center” for your vital organs.

Your spine is not just a stack of bones; it is the protective casing for the most important communication system in your body: the Central Nervous System.

The Anatomy of Connection

Every organ, gland, and blood vessel in your body is under the command of nerves that exit through small openings in your spine. If a vertebra is misaligned—a condition we call a subluxation—it can put pressure on these nerves, essentially “dimming the lights” on the organs they lead to.
